Blob Storage Cost Analysis

Azure block blob storage is offered in various performance and access tiers at different prices points. It has been determined JetStream DR software is most cost effective operated at the Standard Performance level with Hot tier access.

Performance Tier

  • Premium: optimized for high transaction rates and single-digit consistent storage latency
  • Standard: optimized for high capacity and high throughput

The Premium performance tier does not provide substantial benefit for JetStream workloads which are typically large, sequential reads and writes to storage objects. Analysis shows usage cost of the Premium performance tier can be 7-10x more than the Standard performance tiers for JetStream DR workloads without significantly enhancing performance of the software.

Access Tier

  • Hot: Optimized for storing data that is accessed frequently.
  • Cool: Optimized for storing data that is infrequently accessed and stored for at least 30 days.
  • Archive: Optimized for storing data that is rarely accessed and stored for at least 180 days with flexible latency requirements, on the order of hours.

The Hot access tier is the best choice to use for JetStream DR software. Hot and Cool access tier prices are comparable for JetStream workloads operated at a 10% daily update rate; however, system operation using the Cool access tier will be noticeably slower compared to using Hot access. Furthermore, when operated at higher daily update rates, the Cool access tier can actually become more expensive than the Hot access tier because of its higher cost of operations and data transfer which are used by JetStream DR for failover and failback operations and garbage collection.
