{"id":5744,"date":"2024-10-24T19:58:38","date_gmt":"2024-10-25T03:58:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/jetstreamsoft.com\/portal\/?post_type=ht_kb&#038;p=5744"},"modified":"2024-11-21T13:16:04","modified_gmt":"2024-11-21T21:16:04","slug":"snapshot-failure-on-unprotected-vm-or-jetstream-protected-vm-restored-from-backup","status":"publish","type":"ht_kb","link":"https:\/\/jetstreamsoft.com\/portal\/jetstream-knowledge-base\/snapshot-failure-on-unprotected-vm-or-jetstream-protected-vm-restored-from-backup\/","title":{"rendered":"Snapshot Failure on Unprotected VM or JetStream Protected VM Restored from Backup"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"is-style-info wp-block-ht-blocks-messages wp-block-hb-message wp-block-hb-message--withicon\">This article applies to all JSDR software versions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Problem<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">VMs not protected by JetStream DR or unprotected VMs experience snapshot creation failure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"188\" src=\"https:\/\/jetstreamsoft.com\/portal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/snapshot-creation-failure.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5745\" srcset=\"https:\/\/jetstreamsoft.com\/portal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/snapshot-creation-failure.png 1000w, https:\/\/jetstreamsoft.com\/portal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/snapshot-creation-failure-300x56.png 300w, https:\/\/jetstreamsoft.com\/portal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/snapshot-creation-failure-768x144.png 768w, https:\/\/jetstreamsoft.com\/portal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/snapshot-creation-failure-50x9.png 50w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Example of VM snapshot creation failure.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Cause<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">When a VM protected by JetStream DR is restored from a backup or migrated to a different cluster without a graceful cleanup of JetStream DR protection, there is a possibility that one or more disks still hold the JetStream DR &#8220;VM storage policy.&#8221; Similarly, if a disk protected by JetStream DR is removed and then added to another non-protected VM, the JetStream DR policy may be retained leading to VM snapshot failures with an error message such as &#8220;<em>An error occurred while saving the snapshot: Operation failed<\/em>&#8221; or &#8220;<em>An error occurred while taking a snapshot<\/em>.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Solution<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">Identify Affected VMs and Disks:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">Verify if the VMs or any of their disks are still associated with the Jetstream DR &#8220;<em>VM storage policy<\/em>.&#8221;<br><br><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Remove Jetstream DR Policies: \n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">If any of the VM disks (not under Jetstream DR Protection) are found to still be associated with the Jetstream DR &#8220;VM storage policy,&#8221; <em>reset them by changing the policy to <strong>something other than<\/strong> the JetStream DR storage policy or the datastore default policy.<\/em><br><br><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Verify JetStream DR policies have been removed from all non-protected VMs with disks experiencing problems. Then try to take a manual shapshot to ensure they are working properly.<br><br><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-alert wp-block-ht-blocks-messages wp-block-hb-message wp-block-hb-message--withicon\">Do not manually change the VM storage policy of any Jetstream DR protected VM.<br>If you encounter issues with snapshots, engage the JetStream Software support team and submit a current MSA support bundle and VMware logs of the VM with problems, including all rotations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-info wp-block-ht-blocks-messages wp-block-hb-message wp-block-hb-message--withicon\">This article applies to VMs <strong>not <\/strong>protected by JetStream DR (which can be validated from the Health View report).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Problem VMs not protected by JetStream DR or unprotected VMs experience snapshot creation failure.
