JetStream Disaster Recovery to Google Cloud VMware Engine: Protect your critical workloads

Enterprises need strong and comprehensive disaster recovery (DR) to ensure business continuity in the face of unforeseen disruptions. A robust disaster recovery plan safeguards essential data and systems while minimizing downtime and potential financial losses. This not only helps maintain customer trust by providing service reliability but also plays a vital role in satisfying regulatory compliance requirements. If the main protection unit for backup is a specific VM, the scope of DR protection is an entire consistent workload.

Utilizing the cloud as the dedicated DR target further enhances these strategies by eliminating the need to maintain an expensive, underutilized secondary data center. By shifting the recovery site to an agile cloud infrastructure, organizations can replace heavy capital expenditures with a scalable, pay-as-you-go model. This approach delivers the dual benefits of on-demand capacity and rapid elasticity during disruption, removing the operational burden of managing physical hardware without compromising reliability.

An effective DR solution provides substantial cost savings, and near-zero recovery-point and recovery-time objectives (RPO and RTO). These features are built in and JetStream has validated its DR solution with Google Cloud VMware Engine (GCVE). The solution can be downloaded directly from JetStream for use during the preview period.

JetStream DR is a highly cost-optimized DRaaS solution that is still able to meet enterprise customers’ most aggressive RPO and RTO SLAs. In addition, JetStream can provide replication consistency across multiple dependent VMs running on hosts in different clusters. The JetStream solution uses VMware’s VAIO API for continuous  data replication. JetStream DR does not require VM snapshots or agents, and intercepts I/O with minimal performance overhead. JetStream DR replicates data into the least expensive object storage (Google Cloud Storage) and rehydrates data in the target VMware storage on demand. For mission-critical workloads, replicated data can be placed in the target VMware storage in advance (VSAN or Google Cloud NetApp Volumes [GCNV]), ensuring near-zero RTO. In the event of a primary site failure, JetStream fails over workloads to a recovery site hosted on GCVE and restarts the workload in the cloud according to steps outlined in a pre-defined Runbook.

  • Configuration Management: Manages runtime configuration changes for protected VMs.
  • Ready-to-use failover and failback orchestration: Enables rapid recovery, business continuity and full orchestration of protection, failover, failback and DR drill operations, minimizing downtime and impact on the business.
  • Continuous monitoring: Provides replication monitoring including error detection and RPO growth alerts.
  • Continuous replication: Helps ensure minimal data loss in a disaster scenario and Point-in-Time Recovery with minute granularity.
  • Decoupling compute and storage: External storage like Google Cloud NetApp Volumes (GCNV) allows storage to be expanded independently from hosts, providing additional cost savings.

Setup and configuration management
JetStream protects any VM (Windows and Linux) without any OS agents or guest OS modifications. Setup is streamlined with deployment scripts and documentation. JetStream actively monitors and responds to runtime configuration changes such as VM property adjustments and hot-add or removal of disks from protected VMs.

Failover and failback with runbook support
JetStream leverages the vSphere VAIO framework to provide seamless, asynchronous replication at the virtual disk level. This architecture ensures a highly efficient, general-purpose disaster recovery solution for VMware virtualized workloads. It supports both failover and failback and includes runbook support that provides DR administrators with fine-grained control over the recovery order of protected VMs, network configuration and other property changes.

DR drills
JetStream supports safe and non-disruptive failover testing. These test failovers don’t impact ongoing protection, allowing DR administrators to test and validate their recovery plans in a controlled environment, without risk to the critical production environment.
