Failover Unable to Take Ownership of Protected Domain

This article applies to all product versions.

Problem

The “regular failover” task fails displaying the error “Unable to become a Protected Domain owner due to remote activity. Verify that the old DR Virtual Appliance is not accessing the Protected Domain on the Object Store.”

Example showing failed failover task due to an ownership issue.

Cause

The “regular failover” method should only be performed when a complete disaster has occurred on the primary site and the primary site is no longer functional. Because the primary site was up and running in this example, ownership of the protected domain fails to be transferred.

If the primary site is operational, failing over (moving) files should be done using the planned failover option. To test the operation and integrity of failover for the purpose of DR, the test failover option should be used.

“Regular” and “forced” failover options are applicable in the event of complete or partial disaster at the primary site.
