VM Stop Protection Fails: “Failed to detach storage policy from protected VM”

This article applies to all JSDR software versions.

Problem

Attempting to un-protect a virtual machine from JetStream DR fails and displays the message “Failed to detach storage policy from protected VM.

VM Stop Protection has failed.

Troubleshooting

Un-protecting a VM may fail for reasons related to snapshots:

  • The VM to be un-protected currently has an associated snapshot, which is not allowed.
The VM to un-protect has a snapshot.
Snapshot error reported in vCenter.
  • The VM may have had a snapshot that was previously deleted, but consolidation was not performed to clear it.

Snapshots cannot be associated with a VM prior to un-protecting it from JetStream DR. This is a limitation of the VMware VAIO framework.

Solution

  1. Remove any snapshot currently associated with the VM.

  2. Consolidate the VM to ensure any prior snapshot deletion is properly merged back into the base virtual disk.

  3. Retry un-protecting the VM from JetStream DR.
