Point In Time Recovery must be established during the initial setup of a protected domain.

  1. Begin by creating a new protected domain.
  2. On the second step of the workflow to create the protected domain (i.e., “2. Primary Site”):
    • Select the option Enable PITR.

WARNING: PITR cannot be added to a protected domain after the protected domain has been created.

    • Specify a period (time window) in number of days in which VMs and their data can be rolled back.
      • The duration of the PITR time window must be set when the domain is created and cannot be changed afterward.
      • The size of the window can be specified by the user; however, a large protection window will significantly increase the size of the object store necessary for operation.
    • The default size is 3 days.
      • It is not advisable to set the time window larger than necessary. Doing so increases consumption of system resources and slows performance.
      • PITR can be considered an “enhanced function” of a protected domain. All DR functions including failover and failback continue to be supported, but when the PITR option is applied during the setup of the domain, you will have the additional option to roll back VMs and their data to a previous point in time of your choice.

  1. Finish creating the PITR-enabled domain then start protection as normal.
    • Once the PITR-enabled domain is protected, it will be possible to roll back protected VMs to previous points in time, test them and then restore a recovered version of your choosing.
